— There are more impoverished people living in the suburbs than there are in the urban areas they border, according to a new report from the Brookings Institution. Between 2000 and 2008, the poverty rate in U.S. suburbs increased 25% — much faster than the national average. — This year’s college freshmen have been hit particularly hard by the recession, according to this article in the New York Times. Current students are more likely to have a parent who is unemployed and less likely to have found a job. Also, the number of freshman taking out loans is the highest it’s been in nine years.
